Youth Leadership and Mentoring Program (YLMP)
The Youth Leadership and Mentoring Program is designed to provide a platform for high school students to build character, develop a positive bicultural identity, and discover their sense of purpose. This is achieved through leadership training and hands-on practice, as students mentor and support English Language Learner (ELL) students in grades 4–5. Through this experience, both mentors and mentees build confidence and strengthen their character.
The mentor team supports ELL students by providing homework assistance and engaging them in games and skits to help reduce academic and social stress while building confidence. As positive role models, mentors also encourage mentees to share and discuss issues, concerns, and aspirations that are important to them, fostering communication and critical thinking skills.
Through these meaningful interactions, both mentors and mentees develop a stronger sense of self-worth, confidence, and potential. Participants also cultivate essential life skills such as compassion, empathy, social responsibility, teamwork, collaboration, critical thinking, and public speaking—qualities that are vital for 21st-century global citizens.
This program is part of CCC’s East Meets Cultural Dialogue initiative. It is offered to Malden High School and Malden Catholic High School students during the school year, and to ELL students at Beebe, Salemwood, and Linden Schools during the spring semester (January through May), with sessions held on Fridays after school.
