On the afternoon of April 25, Chinese Culture Connection successfully hosted Opera Across Cultures — When Chinese Yue Opera Meets Western Opera on Stage at the Beebe School in Malden. Around 35 audience members gathered together to witness a memorable artistic dialogue between East and West.
In addition to many Malden residents, the event drew attendees from across the Greater Boston area, including Cambridge, Boston, Newton, Brooklne, and Quincy. The audience also spanned a wide range of ages and backgrounds — from curious young children and longtime Chinese Yue Opera lovers to local music enthusiasts and community members eager to explore traditions beyond their own. Together, they created a warm and richly multicultural atmosphere.
The afternoon began with Yue Opera artists Cai Xinfen and Cindy Wang, who guided the audience into the world of Yue Opera by sharing its history and the distinctive performance techniques known as the “Four Skills and Five Methods.” British soprano Letitia Stevens then introduced the traditions and artistry of Western opera, followed by a lively Q&A session in which the audience engaged enthusiastically with all three artists.
The thematic performances centered on the universal theme of longing. Cai Xinfen offered a moving rendition of the classic Yue Opera piece Ten Longings (《十相思》), while Letitia Stevens performed a beautifully curated set of four pieces exploring longing through the Western operatic tradition. The two performances, side by side, allowed the audience to feel something profound — that the deepest human emotions can be expressed in strikingly different musical languages, yet remain equally stirring.
The closing reflection sparked thoughtful conversation, with audience members sharing personal responses and continuing to engage with the artists.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Cai Xinfen, Cindy Wang, and Letitia Stevens for their stunning performances, and to every attendee who joined us for this special afternoon. Chinese Culture Connection will continue to host cross-cultural arts programs like this one — we look forward to seeing you again soon!
